Foodgasms (Recommendations)

If you want some of the best food the city has to offer, you’ll definitely want to venture out of the tourist trap Loop, though there are plenty of awesome restaurants in the Loop.  So without further ado, here we go.  I went ahead and provided you the address, website and my highly recommended dishes to order at each location.  May the foodgasms begin.

Breakfast/Brunch –
  • Wishbone (our fav) | | West Loop 1001 W Washington Blvd
    • Crawfish Cakes & Cheese Grits! (This is my go-to dish!)
    • North Carolina Style Crab Cakes
    • Blackened Catfish
    • Shrimp & Grits (like I really had to mention this…)
    • Corn Cakes w/ their roasted sweet red pepper sauce (this is like pancake crack)
    • Crunchy French Toast (kids and adults will love this)
    • Biscuits or Corn Muffins (for sides)
  • Nana | | Bridgeport 3267 S Halsted St
    • Huevos Rancheros (order it w/ BBQ Pulled Pork).  It’s AMAZEBALLS!!!!  This really is thee only entree you should order.
    • Biscuits And Pork Sage Gravy (Back in 2013, they used to serve a Biscuits w/ Duck Gravy with these perfectly prepared pearl onions but they stopped making the duck gravy due to issues with the duck farm they were using back then.  Please demand they bring it back!
    • Beignets – Don’t bother with these, they don’t impress and are a waste of money.
  • Toast / Toast Two | | Multiple Locations (though I prefer Lincoln Park)
    • Smoked Salmon Omelette (Made as a scrambler – my go-to dish)
    • Stuffed french toast (strawberry, chocolate and/or marscapone cheese) A must order to share as a breakfastizer! I recommend skipping the chocolate and just doing straw/marscapone.
    • Crabby Benedict
    • Pesto & Prosciutto Scramble
  • Batter & Berries | | 2748 N Lincoln Ave
    • French Toast Flight – Order it every single time as a breakfastizer.
    • Sweet Potato Waffle stuffed with fried chicken (served with their homemade hot sauce)!!!!
    • Any of their french toasts or waffles.  Really, who am I kidding?
    • Cluck & Gravy
  • The Bristol | | Bucktown 2152 N Damen Ave
    • Braised Pork Chilaquiles
    • Hangover Breakfast (noodles, pork broth, aromatic vegetables)
    • I’ll leave you with…  “Pastry Board” for dessert!!!
  • Cafe Selmarie | | Lincoln Square 4729 N Lincoln Ave
    • Sunday Brunch is ideal time to go. Wider menu options which are constantly changing.
    • Great bakery also so feel free to leave with a few pies and cakes…lol
  • m.henry | | Andersonville 5707 N Clark St
    • Fannie’s Killer Fried Egg Sandwich – It’s not killer if you’re not a gorgonzola cheese lover like myself.  I suggest ordering it with one of their other offered cheeses.
    • Latina Omelette
  • Bongo Room | | Multiple Locations
    • Breakfast Burrito
    • Chorizo Potato Avocado Omelette
    • Whatever their special pancake or french toast is but beware, it’s usually loaded with a ton of sugar so I’d suggest to order this for the table, preferably for your breakfast dessert.
Lunch & Quick Bites –

Many of these places, you can obviously go for dinner but I’m just listing them based on the times I often go.

  • Cafecito | | Loop 26 E Congress Pkwy
    • Get the Chivito…Best sandwich ever! It includes: Citrus mayo, lettuce, tomato, shoestring potatoes, mozzarella cheese, steak, bacon, ham & a fried egg all pressed on hot cuban bread….TO DIE FOR!
    • Cuban (obviously)
    • Every single one of their sandwiches at one time! LOL.
    • Black Bean soup
    • For dessert, get their Cafe Con Leche & some guava pastries
  • Honey Butter Chicken | | Avondale 3361 N Elston Ave
    • Their fried chicken served w/ cornbread, homemade honey butter and hotsauce (on table) are fucknomenal!!!  This is prob my #1 comfort spot in the city.
    • Must Order “Amazeballs” Sides:
      • Pimento Mac ‘n Cheese
      • Roasted Garlic Grits w/ Scallions & Chicken Crust Crunchies (Thee best grits I’ve ever had!)
      • Creamed Corn w/ Thai Green Curry was good.  Not mind-blowing orgasmic like the above 2 but good nonetheless
  • Simply It (Vietnamese) | | 2269 N Lincoln Ave
    • You really can’t go wrong ordering anything off their menu.  That said, my favs (thus far) are:
      • Avocado Wontons (appetizer)
      • Fresh Summer Rolls (appetizer)
      • Northern Vietnam Fisherman’s Soup – Simply Outstanding…Simply IT!
      • Catfish in a Clay Pot (Ca Kho To) – This my friends, is my Go-To dish and is thee bomb!!!!!
      • SIMPLY IT’S Fried Rice – Just order a side for the table to share.  So good.
      • Caramelized Pork Belly and Eggs.  Do you really need to hear anything further???
      • Before you leave, order a Bubble Tea (w/ Tapioca) to go.  Go with or mix the following: Lychee, Mango, Banana, Papaya, Taro, Watermelon, Kiwi, etc.
  • DMK Burger Bar | | Lakeview 2954 N Sheffield Ave
    • #7 – Big DMK (Think Big Mac at its best)
    • #10 – Turkey Burger – comes with a dijonaise that just kicks ass
    • Parmesan Fries w/ Truffle Cream – A Must Order!
    • Chili-Rubbed Onion Strings w/ House Ketchup
    • Any of their Mac ‘n Cheeses.  Just beware…lol
    • Since you must end with a shake, go with a Vanilla/Peanut Butter Mix (as Chocolate is just overkill)
  • 90 Miles Cuban Café | | Logan Square 2540 W Armitage Ave – Being from Florida their Cuban food is not bad at all!
    • Papa Rellena (appetizer)
    • Empanadas, Assorted (appetizer)
    • Croquetas (appetizer)
    • Sandwiches –
      • Cubano
      • Media Noche (my go-to sandwich)
    • Lechon
    • Rabo Encendido (Oxtail)
    • Churrasco – My Go-to but ask for the chimichurri on the side as they can get carried away with it sometimes and the steak can get overpowered by the sauce, which is never a good thing.
    • Milanesa 90 Miles, Steak
  • Portillos | | River North 100 W Ontario St
    • Hotdog. Order at least 2. This Chicago tradition w/ everything includes: mustard, relish, freshly chopped onions, sliced red ripe tomatoes, kosher pickle and sport peppers piled onto a perfectly steamed poppy seed bun.
    • Chili Cheese Dog w/ Onions – One of the best chili dogs I’ve ever had. Just the perfect steamy messy chili dog we all love!
    • French Fries – Theirs kick ass!
    • Chopped Salad – I’m not a huge salad person but this one does it for me. Includes: Romaine & Iceberg mix with Tubetti Pasta, chicken, bacon, tomatoes, Gorgonzola cheese, green onion, red cabbage and tossed with House dressing.
    • Ending with Portillo’s Famous Chocolate Cake is also a MUST! Secret (not really…lol) ingredient = Mayonaise
  • Briciola | | Ukrainian Village 937 N Damen Ave
    • Fritto Misto (appetizer)
    • Calamari Alla Griglia (appetizer) – I much prefer my calamari grilled so if you ever have the opportunity to order it that way, do it.  Most places can prepare it that way even if their menu only offers the traditional fried version.
    • Di Barbabietole (beet & goat chz salad) – I hate beets but my wife absolutely loves this.
    • Tortelloni Al Burro Fuso (Ricotta stuffed jumbo Tortelloni with brown butter sauce and crunchy hazelnuts) – Ummmm, you’ve probably never had this and you’ll be sorry it took so long to try it.  It’s fuckmazing!
    • Tagliatelle Alla Bolognese – You usually can never go wrong ordering this but as I recall, they barely gave you any sauce which make the disk entirely bland…so tread lightly here.
    • You MUST end with the chef’s traditional Tiramisu.  I honestly come here just for dessert at times cuz it’s that good!
  • La Scarola | | River West 721 W Grand Ave
    • Escarole Soup is out of this world! As you sip this soup in the beginning, your soul moves.  Just close your eyes and focus on this soup’s perfection.  The soup’s name might never jump out at you as something you would ever order (especially if you’ve never had escarole before) but it’s one of the best dishes the city has to offer IMO.  Sipping this soup just makes whatever craziness you’ve been through or dealing with, ok.  You’re home now with comfort all around you.  Relax and sip your life’s troubles away…
    • Grilled Calimari…of course!
    • Veal Piccata over a bed of angel hair pasta in a light lemon butter garlic wine sauce – Usually, whether Italian restaurants have it on the menu or not, this is what I ask for.
  • Lao Sze Chuan | | Chinatown 2172 S Archer Ave
    • Best Chinese in Chicago that I’ve been to thus far!  There’s hundreds and hundreds of menu items.  I always stare at the menu and I think I forget the last 3 dishes I wanted to order.  I’m not even gonna try and begin to give you recommendations here other than this one:
    • Tony’s Chicken & Three Chili – If you like spicy, this is a MUST order!!!  Order it as an extra for the table to try if you want.  You’re basically eating this overwhelming spicy chicken uncontrollably.  “Must toss more spicy ass chicken in my mouth….more more more…”.  It’s that good.
    • Once you think you’ve had enough food, order more.  Chinese Coma must occur!!!!
  • Tufano’s Vernon Park Tap | | University Village/Little Italy1073 W Vernon Park Pl
    • If you want great Italian food with that included mafioso feel, this is your place!  The last time I was there, we had a window table and I kid you not when I say I must of seen 2-3 senior citizens get out of their car with doorside valet pulling oxygen tanks and looking they just walked off the scene of the Godfather, Goodfellas or Casino.  This place has it all.  True Italian atmosphere, fucknomenal food & a laid back family-friendly environment.  Think Real Italian with a Buca di Beppo feel.
      • Fried Calimari – theirs is outstanding
      • Veal Picante w/ Pine Nuts.  What else did you think I’d order…LMFAO!
  • Taqueria Traspasada | | West Town 811 N. Ashland Ave
    • A true Authentic Mexican joint in the Chi-Town area.
    • Order anything…LOL.  But when trying a new Mexican place, ordering tacos is a requirement.
    • Whatever you end up ordering, just make sure you wash it down with a Jarritos Tamarind soda.  Is there really a better soda out there?  No.
  • Wao Bao (Hot Asian Buns) | | Loop 835 N Michigan Ave or State/Lake
    • Perfect stop for a quick snack (in-between any meal!)
    • Get a couple 6-packs of assorted Bao & go to work!
      • Teriyaki chicken
      • Spicy kung pao chicken
      • whole wheat vegetable (that’s for vegans, not us!)
      • Thai curry chicken
      • Spicy mongolian beef
      • BBQ pork
    • Their rice bowls are also very good
    • Wash it all down with their Homemade Ginger Ale
  • Kuma’s Corner | | Avondale 2900 W. Belmont Ave
    • Always voted one of the top 100 burger joints in the country, so you must go!
    • Burger joint with a Heavy Metal theme but don’t be intimidated.  Their burgers won’t forgive you
      • Kuma Burger – 1st time visitors, start here. Bacon, Sharp Cheddar, Fried Egg, Lettuce, Tomato & Onion on Pretzel Bun
      • Black Sabbath – Blackening Spice, Housemade Chili, Pepperjack, Red Onion
      • High On Fire – Sriracha, Roasted Red Pepper, Prosciutto, Grilled Pineapple, Mae Ploy Sweet Chili Paste
      • Led Zeppelin – Bacon, Slow Cooked Pork Shoulder, BBQ Sauce, Sharp Cheddar, Pickles
    • If someone you’re with orders a salad, punch them in the face.
